Welcome to the MedMentor podcast. My name is Tracye Lawyer. I am an orthopedic surgeon. This podcast is different from any other medical podcast. My purpose to do this podcast is to talk to and interview current medical students to hear their thoughts, ideas, desires, struggles, ambition, fears and excitement as they go through medical student. I want to provide a safe and educational forum for pre-medical and medical students to hear other students experiences as they go through medical school. You will be surprised how much we are all alike. And remember, at one point I was a medical student going through similar triumphs and tribulations. So enjoy and I hope this brings up great discussions among your peers but also to know that you are not alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Dr. Tracye Lawyer: Hello and welcome to the MedMentor podcast. My name is Dr. Tracye Lawyer, and I am an orthopaedic surgeon.

I have been in practice for almost eight years now, and I have been blogging for about that same amount of time. I grew up in California and did my undergraduate training at Stanford University. After that, I took several years before going to medical school, and then I completed my medical training, residency, and sports medicine fellowship.

I started out practicing in a hospital or health-system setting, and I have been in private practice for about a year now.

Since coming out of fellowship and moving into private practice, I also started blogging and building out the MedMentor platform.

Training is hard. Training to become a doctor is hard. It is challenging, demanding, and at times overwhelming. There are exciting moments, but there are also frustrating moments and difficult stretches.

One of the reasons I wanted to start this podcast is that there are a lot of medical podcasts where people mostly talk about their own journey through medical school and residency. What I really wanted to do instead was interview current medical students and hear directly from them.

I want to hear about their experiences, the different pathways they took to get into medicine, the specialties they are interested in, and what they are learning as they go. I also want to hear about the current realities of medical school, because things have changed over time.

This podcast is for medical students wherever they are right now, whether they are in their first year, second year, third year, or fourth year. I think every year comes with different challenges, and I want this to be a place where those challenges can be talked about honestly.

My goal is to create a space where students can share what is hard, what is exciting, what they wish they had known earlier, and what keeps them moving forward.

If you are pre-med, I hope this gives you perspective. If you are already in medical school, I hope it gives you encouragement and reminds you that you are not the only one going through these kinds of struggles and experiences.

I am really excited to get this started, and I hope these conversations bring value, perspective, and reassurance to students at every stage of the journey.
